Bilingualism in the Mainstream

As media shifts to become more global, being bilingual is an asset like never before: it is now a tool to connect with the international audience. This is beginning to hit the mainstream at recognized traditionally English-speaking network levels in America, not just in foreign countries. Comcast SportsNet Houston, for one, has taken initiative to reach out to any fan interested in Jeremy Lin and the NBA's Houston Rockets. Howard Chen covers the Rockets for both the English-speaking and Mandarin-Chinese-speaking audiences. He earned his spot on TV through his reports in English, but online, his Mandarin Chinese version of his Rockets reports has proven to be a way to extend a more personal olive branch internationally.
